Ask most law firm security leaders about cyber threat intelligence, and you'll get a polite nod and a shrug. It's seen as something banks and defense contractors do — a mature-program luxury, not a legal-sector necessity. I think that's backward, and the data backs me up: law firms are repeatedly and specifically targeted by named threat groups that study this sector's weaknesses the way litigators study opposing counsel.

When I built out global threat intelligence and threat-hunting capabilities, the resistance wasn't technical. It was cultural. Legal teams are trained to operate on precedent and known process. Threat intelligence asks for the opposite: acting on probability, before certainty, based on what's happening to firms that look like yours right now.

This year, we nearly lost our threat intel team. Senior leadership was looking for places to cut the budget and didn't understand what the team did or why it mattered. That gap in understanding is the real threat to legal-sector security maturity — not a lack of available tools.

Here's what got lost in translation: good CTI does three things. It tells you which threat actors are targeting your sector and how. It lets you compare their tactics against your security controls to identify gaps before they do. And it lets you hunt for those specific tactics in your own environment to find out if someone's already inside before you get the call confirming it.

The firms that get hit repeatedly by the same threat actor groups aren't unlucky. They're just not asking who's actually targeting organizations like theirs or hunting for the answer. Most find out the hard way, after the breach, instead of before it.

Threat intelligence isn't overhead. It's the difference between defending against attacks in general and proactively defending against the attacker who's already decided you're worth their time.
