Threat-Led Defense: Built on the Threats You Face, Not the Tools You’ve Inherited

One of the most important shifts in Threat Detection & Response isn’t the emergence of new threats, it’s the acceleration of vulnerability discovery itself. Advances in automation, AI-assisted research, and large-scale discovery platforms — along with high-profile AI innovations like Mythos — are making it faster and easier than ever to identify and exploit vulnerabilities across environments. But as discovery scales, differentiation diminishes. Organizations are inundated with vulnerabilities, many of which lack clear context on real-world risk or relevance.

This creates a growing friction point: more vulnerabilities, but less clarity. Traditional approaches that prioritize issues based on severity or map detections to high-level techniques often fall short in explaining how an attacker would actually operate. Techniques, by design, are abstractions.  They describe categories of attack behavior, but not the procedures, which provide the in-depth specificity into the steps adversaries take to achieve their objectives. As a result, security teams are left guessing which vulnerabilities truly matter and how they translate into real risk.

What’s emerging in response is a rapid shift toward a threat-led defense approach and building defenses based on the threats organizations face, not the tools they’ve inherited. By understanding the procedures adversaries use, organizations can determine which capabilities are truly necessary and what changes are required to defend against how attacks actually unfold.

In a landscape defined by an increasing volume of vulnerabilities, categorizing issues by severity or CVSS/EPSS scores alone is no longer sufficient. What matters is understanding which threats, vulnerabilities, and assets can enable real-world attack execution and how to effectively stop them. This shift toward procedure-led security allows organizations to prioritize with precision and align defenses to reduce attacker success and the threats that matter most in your environment.
