AI Agents Need Owners, Not Just Access

One of the most important AI security conversations is not about the model itself. It is about ownership, identity, and control.

As organizations adopt copilots, AI assistants, and autonomous agents, many are giving non-human systems access to business data, workflows, SaaS platforms, code repositories, tickets, documents, and customer information. In many cases, these agents are operating with inherited permissions, unclear accountability, and limited visibility into what actions they performed or why.

That creates a new identity problem.

Traditional IAM was designed around people, roles, groups, privileged users, and service accounts. AI agents do not fit neatly into that model. They can act continuously, combine permissions across systems, trigger workflows, summarize sensitive information, and make recommendations that influence business decisions.

The risk is not that AI exists. The risk is unmanaged AI access.

Every AI agent should have a business owner, a defined purpose, least privilege access, logging, data boundaries, approval rules, and a clear offboarding path. Security teams should be able to answer basic questions: Who approved this agent? What systems can it access? What data can it process? What actions can it take? Who is accountable if it makes a bad decision or exposes sensitive information?

AI can absolutely improve productivity and security outcomes. But without identity governance, it becomes another form of shadow access at machine speed.

The companies that move fastest will not be the ones that ban AI. They will be the ones that make AI adoption safe, governed, and accountable by design.
